WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny has released his sworn statement to the city’s Ethics Board regarding the investigation into his handling of a locked, but not yet secured, municipal dropbox outside City Hall last September.
In an email to the media on Tuesday, Diny says the statement fulfills information requested by the Ethics Board last month when they voted to take up the complaint filed against him by a handful of residents.
“In summary, I secured the drop box until the City Clerk and I could ‘iron out’ many of the issues of which she was aware, and to ensure that Wisconsin Election Commission (WEC) best practices,” said Diny.
The Mayor also noted that the City Attorney and Clerk have not complied with the Board’s call for information, citing the ongoing Wisconsin Department of Justice investigation into the matter. He says that, combined with the information he has presented, should lead to the dismissal of the complaint. “I trust that the Ethics Board, upon reviewing my responses, and the ‘lack thereof’ of others required to submit statements and documents, will immediately dismiss this case.
“As repeated more than once by City Council members, we all want to get past this as soon as possible and move forward with the City’s business,” added Diny.

The statement includes more than a dozen bullet points regarding meetings with the City Clerk before the August primary and the events leading up to September 22nd, when he wheeled the box into his office after noticing it was set up outside City Hall but not bolted to the ground.
Diny’s entire statement can be seen in the PDF at the top of this story.
