Harold William Schardt, 97, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 3:30 in the morning at his home in Rochester, Minnesota.
He was born on February 17, 1920 in the town of Norwood, Wisconsin. The son of the late Arthur and Kathryn (Breed) Schardt.
Harold was united in marriage to Rose E. (Gardner) Schardt. They were married for 67 years and had three sons; Terry (Shelly), Dean (Anna) and Bruce (Lori), eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Harold enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1939 after he graduated from Antigo High School. He served in three locations in the Caribbean during World War II, in South Korea during the Korean Police Action, and in Saigon during the Vietnam War. He was also stationed in numerous locations in the United States and in Europe. He retired from the Air Force in 1967 and returned to Birnamwood as a Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-4) with 28 years of service. He is going to be dearly missed.
Harold was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mattoon. He was an avid reader. Harold and Rose enjoyed square and round dancing for 25 years. They were involved in community services for many years delivering Meals on Wheels in Antigo. They also ran a Senior Schatzkopf card club in Wausau for 17 years and organized two card clubs in Antigo for seniors.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ione Hitt and Arlene O’Neil and two brothers, Dick and Bob Schardt.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home in Birnamwood. Rev. Dean Bertsch will officiate. Inurnment will be in Union Cemetery in Aniwa with military rites conducted by Darling-Gunderson Post #341, American Legion. Visitation will be on Saturday from 1:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home.
