LaVaughn A. Carlson, 94, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed
away on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at the Gundersen Harmony Care Center in Harmony,
Minnesota.
He was born on April 13, 1924, in Blue River,
Wisconsin, to the late Alvin and Merle (Shannon) Carlson. He attended high
school there, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served from 1943 to
1946. When the war ended, the GI Bill allowed him to earn a degree from the
University of Wisconsin. He later added an MSEd degree in secondary education
from Winona State University.
He began teaching physics at Lincoln High School in
Wisconsin Rapids in 1954. He retired in 1986, but he never stopped teaching; he
was a born teacher, and anyone who talked to him for more than five minutes
probably learned something.
On Aug. 28, 1948, he married Ona Alice Rockwell in
Richland Center, Wisconsin. She passed away on June 3, 2012.
Survivors include his son, Ken; daughter-in-law, Niza;
and grandchildren, Eric and Kirsten.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on
Monday, May 14, 2018, at the Herman-Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids.
The Rev. Woody Baumgartner will officiate. Full Military Honors will follow the
service at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Richland Cemetery in
Richwood, Wisconsin. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday morning
from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
