WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A final move-out date has been set for residents of the Hidden Lakes Estates mobile home park in Schofield.
Marathon County Judge Michael Moran gave a 60-day notice to vacate on Tuesday, meaning all residents have to be cleared out of the unlicensed facility by November 8th. Schofield Public Works Director Mark Thuot says the city is hoping to work with those still left in the park in hopes that they land on their feet somewhere else.
“We want them to know what’s available to them as far as help from Marathon County and the state,” said Thuot. “Also North Central Community Action and Judicare.”
The park’s owner, Wyoming-based Sustainable Resources, is responsible for passing the notice to vacate on to residents that are left. But Thuot says the city is ready to intervene if they have to.
Thuot adds that it’s hard to say how many residents are left in the park. The facility has been operating without a license for nearly two years now, meaning the city hasn’t been given a record of names and addresses for people living in the park for at least that long. Additionally, the city has had no recent contact with Sustainable Resources. “They still have a water bill and a tax bill, but have they contacted us in any way? No. They paid their utilities and such up to the first of the year but in the last two quarters they have not.”

City Council President Joan Joss, whose district includes the park, has also said that squatters have taken over some of the vacant units at night in recent months.
Tuesday’s decision does not give the city the right to take over the park. Thout notes that the land will remain property of Sustainable Resources however they will not be allowed to run it as a mobile home park since there is no license.
